A golden-skinned mermaid closes her eyes and holds a yellow seahorse to her chest, her tail coiling in green scales and a burst of blue, red and magenta, dozens of clay fish swimming around her. Sometimes I am the school, sometimes the mermaid — here she is the one who makes the tide the others follow.
